Mental Health Approach:

I facilitate psychedelic integration as well as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy in collaboration with a medical provider of your choice. I do my best to support you in making sense of the psychological / mental health aspects of this experience by working with a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual or existential approach. Our work together supports what the medicine is doing in your body and brain, while also giving you a supportive container to make sense of any visionary mind/body/heart/soul exploration that may occur as a result of experiences our modern society calls “psychedelic”. Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy offers a framework to maintain positive mental health gains from the medicine over the long term. Our work together is to help you design your ongoing mental health plan, and to discover the best rhythm for your approach to psychedelic medicine work, and how you best integrate those experiences, which people have found brings a great deal of relief from pain and suffering.

Taking care of your mental health can be a practical and accessible process that leads to lasting balance in your day to day life and a shift in your overall self-narrative. My goal is to help support you in getting in touch with your inner healing instinct.  You take over where we leave off in session. It's a hard time on planet Earth right now. You may feel better, and then you may find yourself having other thoughts and feelings in the future.

I offer a mental health practice approach that’s a bit like learning a language. Using what you learn in session and applying it as best you can in your daily life can help you become more fluent- but fluent doesn't mean perfect. Fluent means you know enough to learn more. In other words, there is no cure for not speaking a language- you just keep studying and practicing until you can do with it what it is you would like to do with it as fluently as you’re able. There are many languages that help people make sense of the world, and many different opportunities to study. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one language of making sense of what you've been through by addressing any ongoing maladaptive thoughts, behaviors, or physiological reactions that may be attributing to your feeling of dis-ease and suffering, or a state of mental illness.

With fluency, we can start to integrate the big experiences of our lives, laying the foundation for lasting, positive shift in perspective. This means you becoming more fluent with yourself- in the deepest sense. Your Self. We can expect fluency to unfold and expand over time with consistent practice and engagement.

When you’re finding yourself more in touch and in balance with your Self, we’ll set some goals to work on at home on your own. When things become difficult to process, then by all means, let’s catch up in session and see what else there may be to practice together. That isn’t a failure on either of our parts, but the realization that it’s a lot to process, this whole life-on-Earth thing. The concept of Right Relationship comes to mind. Being in right relationship with our Selves, each other, in how we approach our therapeutic alliance, and with how we approach the visionary states and ways of being that come up in our work in psychotherapy. Some of this process is meant to teach you how to self-assess, and how to approach working with visionary experiences induced by medicines like ketamine, and plant medicines like ayahausca.

Noticing symptoms return is beginning to recognize when there are things to work out with your Self.

Checking back in with psychedelic-assisted therapy to set some intentions that include:

  • revisiting the psychedelic (visionary) state that accompanies medicines such as generic, racemic ketamine, and having a safe container to unpack and make sense of your experience
  • some grounding ways to apply any lessons to your everyday life
  • referral for independent medical consultation
  • address problematic behaviors or habits, addictive or problematic cravings for particular substances, compulsions – these are indicative that your mental health practice may require more professional support.
  • striving towards being in Right Relationship in the alliance with the therapist and the medicine

Psychedelic Mental Health Support when you’re unable to make sense of it on your own

Professional Experience:

I graduated with my Masters in Psychology in 2002 with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Miami Institute of Psychology at Carlos Albizu University. My passion was in helping people find healthy expressions of themselves in relationships and sexuality. I continued my training at the American Academy of Clinical Sexology thru their partnership at the time with Maimonides University, one of the initial doctoral programs in the country approved to offer training leading to Florida's Sex Therapist certification —the only state certification that existed at the time). I became a board certified clinical sexologist in 2003, and began my practice in New York, then Missouri as part of the National Health Service Corps (06-08). After completing my dissertation in 2007, I gained invaluable experience from a Van Ameringen grant-funded position as mental health therapist in one of NYC’s first comprehensive transgender health programs with Community Healthcare Network in the Bronx, then a second year as clinical mental health supervisor at the Staten Island LGBT Community Center.

These clinical opportunities ranged from working with active military / service-members, veterans and their families in rural Missouri, to homeless trans-identified folkx in the Bronx. These were also opportunities to consult with other providers ranging from gender affirming surgeons to counseling and mental health colleagues from around the world. I went on to serve one year as president of the NYC Chapter of the New York Mental Health Counselors Association , building and launching their first social media network, giving a newly-formed license area a scalable way to connect to Web 2.0. I was honored that same year to be elected as Member-at-Large of the New York Association of Marriage and Family Therapists while part-time adjunct faculty, teaching human sexuality and psychology at the undergraduate and graduate level and supervising pre-licensed clinicians.

In 2015, while teaching Human Sexuality, Lifespan Development and Social Psychology at Hunter College, I helped spread word as associate producer for the world's first documentary about masturbation (no really!) called Sticky: A Self Love Story. In December 2017 I became an AASECT Certified sex therapist and an AASECT continuing education provider, and moved to California the following year.

In 2021, I began full-time sabbatical to begin studying psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy as a specialty and began the process of founding a data-driven, psychedelic therapy clinical practice institute centering LGBTQ2S and BIPOC folx and allies. (“Institute” only to designate a systematic study and practice and how psychedelic experiences can affect a person’s mental health in as positive and beneficial way as possible— thoughtful work/study/clinical practice and mastery built on a cognitive-behavioral foundation).

I began offering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and integration in 2022, in remote collaboration with Flow Integrative Ketamine and psychedelic insurance provider, Enthea, as part of a project offering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for employees of Dr. Bronner’s. In May 2023, I received my Certificate in Psychedelic Therapy and Research from CIIS, the California Institute of Integral Studies. (Project) In January 2024, I contributed to a forthcoming Oxford University Press textbook on psychedelic-assisted therapies in palliative care. (Expected Winter 2024 release). I am adding animal-assisted interventions, and resources for dying, death and grief / death doula / palliative -informed care to my practice offerings.

With over 20 years of research and practice in counseling and psychotherapy, I’ve learned that a substantial number of mental health providers in America work in private practice, and these small businesses not only provide an essential service in times of crisis, and are expected to do so regardless of clients’ ability to pay, these mental health practices are also employers with workers who deserve fair pay for their services and support. Please consider a locally licensed/authorized mental health provider to work with when possible. Check in with your mental health while knowing you are supporting small business and a living wage for the person helping you process life. Fees and rates for psychedelic support and medicine-assisted psychotherapy reflect the actual costs of the human offering this work, which involves training, support, and making a livable wage. Although solely working remotely currently, I strive to do the same data-driven work remotely as I do in person, in office, in retreat settings, or in-home visits, with each option having its own overhead costs. I am not an app. I do not use AI.

In an effort to train the next generation of psychedelic practitioners, I offer a practicum in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and support involving twelve weeks of ketamine experiences with the various routes of administration and dosing levels framed with a cognitive-behavioral approach to integrative support. I offer this practicum to clinicians and non-clinicians at all levels in an effort to begin to build a robust infrastructure of psychedelic practitioners and the ongoing professional development this practice requires as more of the medicines that are catalysts to these types of experiences are FDA-approved, decriminalized, legalized, and experienced within indigenous-allied contexts around the world. I offer clinical consultation to clinicians internationally to bring ketamine-assisted psychotherapy to the local level using culturally-appropriate pre-existing resources, and community support training in cognitive behavioral therapy. With our Institute format, memberships offer access to mental health resources created by our Clinical Fellows and member clinicians.

Research continues to lead communities around the world toward decriminalizing and legalizing psychedelic and plant medicine practices, and the research supporting psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is overwhelmingly positive, despite the reports of as many bad actors in the psychedelic underground and industry as in every other area of society. We can look forward to a revolutionized mental health paradigm with the decriminalization and legalization of psychedelics, normalization of psychedelic integration and harm-reduction, and the ceremonies and rituals surrounding these medicines which have been used for millennia before the global “War on Drugs”. You are trying to process being alive and part of a system that is failing you. That requires more than a pill or a medicine. It’s the system that is failing, and human support is essential.

The unguided use of psychedelics in the general population without access to resources to integrate those experiences causes harm. Having a supported way to experience these medicines to maximize their benefits and reduce suffering is essential. For some that may be through the medicine itself, support from a shamanic community, meditation practice, peer counselor or psychotherapy. For others, their care may be better aligned to a medical / psychiatric setting or provider. Various levels of care exist, as do varying wisdom approaches. Find support that makes the most sense to you in your personal experience of being a person on the planet.

Medicine-assisted psychotherapy combines the pharmacological aspects of a medicine with insight and often transformative philosophical shifts that lead many to lasting change. This is replicable over time, and ketamine clearly fits within this framework, as will the psychedelic medicines that have been categorized by the FDA as "breakthrough medicines". To paraphrase CBT pioneer Albert Ellis, we want you to “get better not just feel better”, and decades of ongoing evidence suggests cognitive behavioral therapy, an evidence-based mind-body psychotherapy, to be the gold standard of psychotherapy, although studies indicate certain subsets of people may be flagged in advance for having a negative reaction with this mental health approach. If your medical provider has prescribed a medicine, adding at least 12 weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be measurable in the brain, supporting the types of body, brain and psychological benefits that have been reported for over 100 years in psychedelic medicine.

Doing drugs through the pandemic might have been a way to cope with this last few years of life here on Earth, but psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, with the assistance of caring compounding pharmacists and a team trained in medicine and mental health, can be YOUR mental health revolution.

The experiences elicited from psychedelic medicines and non-medicine practices are, for many, what Maslow called peak experiences, and can be a tool for psycho-spiritual exploration leading to what Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, a specific type of the well-researched Cognitive-behavioral therapy, calls a radical philosophical shift. Researcher William R. Miller calls this quantum change. The experience is the feature, although for some it is reported as an Adverse Effect. While the psychedelic dissociative experience may be diminished, dismissed, or avoided altogether, ongoing scientific literature exists on psychotherapy, with and without medicines such as psychedelics like ketamine, in addition to the thousands of years of practice in cultures throughout time around the planet.

The phenomenon of quantum change - PubMed
Quantum change-the subject of this issue of In Session-refers to sudden, dramatic, and enduring transformations that affect a broad range of personal emotion, cognition, and behavior. This phenomenon has been described since the beginnings of psychology, most notably by William James in Varieties of …

I find it a deep honor to accompany you on this journey, and hope I can help support you in getting in touch and staying in touch with your most authentic Self.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy & Support.pdf

Download Practice Guide - Condensed lit review in support of a sample cognitive behavioral therapy protocol. The therapist and client go over this in detail after a client has been prescribed therapeutic ketamine from a medical provider, where they have gone over risks, benefits, contraindications, and then have had their medicine dispenses by a pharmacist, who requires additional patient information on how to safely store the medicine, and information about the medicine itself. Alternately, if ketamine is administered by a clinician in an office, the various safety protocols are given to the patient / client and signs of risks and benefits.

For patients where ketamine is contraindicated, an identical course of cognitive-behavioral therapy is available. Your medical providers may discuss other treatment approaches.

Professional Endorsements

I am {currently} in my 9th week of 12 weeks of Ketamine practicum, and I cannot recommend this enough. What I appreciate the most is the thoughtful, insightful manner that Dr. DeMarco took when introducing the medicine to me. He shares his vast amount of information freely not only with his students but also with the Ketamine community at large. I have been sharing my experiences with my colleagues and I am asked frequently about my work with Dr. DeMarco. I feel that all psychotherapists should go through practicums such as this to experience what a client may encounter.
I feel that in addition to the previous psychedelic education, this practicum has leveled up my knowledge and experience working with Ketamine and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you may have.

Dominique Condevaux LAC, LPC, MAC, ACS, BC-TMH, NCC

There are people who feel called to do this work, but may not have the resources to know even where to begin, and as psychedelics and plant medicines are decriminalized, legalized and/or prescribed and become more accessible, my hope is that a collective/guild model can provide a structure for new clinicians to receive a living wage while gaining the training and experience needed to bring this specialized care to others in a way that is ethical, legal, equitable, non-violent, and culturally relevant.

Please contact me if you feel called to do this very human, very existential work.

The More You Know

What is a Psychedelic Practitioner?

According to Janis Phelps, the founder and director of the CIIS Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research, which conducts the first academically accredited, professional certificate training program for psychedelic-assisted therapy and research, “On average, the professionals who apply for the programme have 15 years of licensed practice, so they’re quite experienced in their work, and “empathic, trustworthy, knowledgeable of the psychedelic states, and have a strong degree of spiritual intelligence.” Psychedelic practitioners in this program receive training in diverse areas “ from anthropology, clinical and transpersonal psychology, psychoanalysis and ceremonial uses.” Dr. Phelps goes on to say “we emphasize the research approach for now, because of the need for therapists to be in FDA-approved clinics. This is a compromise we made, but the upside is that now our graduates get hired by these research entities and they’re opening clinics that will be ready to use MDMA and psilocybin in the next couple of years.

What is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)?

Psychedelic Therapy: Does the psychedelic experience matter?
Psychedelic medicines have been studied in the Western medical literature consistently for over 100 years, over 60 of which in the ongoing study and practice of racemic ketamine. Psychedelic experiences are described similarly and often felt as profoundly meaningful.
